Chinese perceptions and impressions of the US have been conflicting over time, but they are linked to history, culture, and reality. As the US has been a superpower since World War 2, the memories of US power since the mid 19th and early 20th century since the Chinese were more willing to see the US as a land of possibilities. The observations of Chinese travelers in Land without ghosts offer insights on the future of Chinese-US relations. Chinese nationalism and patriotism are recurring themes in the sentiments of Chinese observers and writers, who were concerned that the Chinese would be oppressed by the more powerful western countries given the treatment of blacks and Chinese immigrants.
