Based on the Book “Desert Solitaire,” Write a Book Report
Desert Solitaire was originally published in 1968 by American author, Edward Abbey. Desert Solitaire shares a philosophical perspective of life by a man who has strong feelings and is courageous enough to voice his opinions. In the eighteen essays that make the book, Abbey shares stories from the desert and thoughts on how they relate to life in general. Desert Solitaire begins with Abbey’s arrival at Arches National Monument; his arrival marks his first day of work.
The first few chapters set a location for the entire novel. Abbey tells of the various examples of unique fauna and flora in the area. He goes into the crucial details of each description, proving that he truly cares about the desert. Abbey also discovers how utterly alone he is at times, and how much that fact bothers him. As evidenced in the novel, Abbey writes, “No wanderers, no travelers, no campers have come to this part of the desert today, and for a few moments, I feel and realize that I am very much alone” (13). Initially, Abbey wanted to seclude himself from the rest of humanity, but, despite doing so, he still feels lonely. Even though he seems content in his lone wolf state, it is evident that he longs for some human interaction as he occasionally takes jobs outside the National Monument.
Basically, Abbey uses Desert Solitaire to complain about tourism and industrialization. He does think that people should come and witness the beautiful things he observes every day; however, in order to fully appreciate nature, Abbey thinks that they should be willing to leave civilization behind. Abbey has a deep and abiding appreciation for the desert, but, he is determined that only certain sorts should share that joy with him. And while he may wish for us, his readers, to value what he values, he seems uninterested in allowing certain kinds to share his joys.
Abbey is also very fascinated by the history of the desert. He talks about how the rocks were formed, and the long process the rocks went through to become what they are. A...
