Why Becoming a Veterinary Technician Excites Me Essay

I remember visiting our local vet for the first time at such a young age. Our puppy Cal had suddenly become lethargic and refused to eat. This was my first encounter with veterinary technology. The vet technician took Cal and facilitated running all the necessary tests and lab work to figure out what was wrong with him.

I had always thought that the veterinarian did everything. But I hadn’t realized how much work goes into animal care, and that vets need other specialists to assist them. That’s what veterinary technicians do. They assist the licensed veterinarian and primarily focus on lab work and testing to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of sick, injured, or disabled animals.

One of the reasons why this became my dream job is seeing how our vet tech treated the animals that came into their clinic. If he was just there to do his job, he would simply take Cal and get on with the tests, as required. But the veterinarian technician who took Cal under his wing was incredibly patient and kind. He tried to connect with Cal first so that he would feel safe around him. He was also gentle in maneuvering him to get the right angle for the tests. He didn’t rush the job and made sure that Cal was not traumatized by the experience.

I can’t imagine how scared or in pain some animals might be upon arriving at the vet clinic. I also can’t imagine how anxious many pet owners are when they come. I think that’s why it’s so important that vet techs are good with both people and animals, and must not treat the job as just a tasklist. I remember how we were made to feel reassured during that first visit, and I want to help other pet owners and animals feel the same way.

I think that veterinary technology is such a rewarding career, especially if you love animals like me. While Cal already sadly passed away due to old age, we have another dog named Griffin and a rabbit named Andy in our home. It always makes me sad when they get sick or hurt, and have to be taken to the clinic. But a lot of my nervousness goes away when our veterinary technicians promise to take good care of them while they’re there.

I want to get into a vet tech program after high school and experience job shadowing once I’ve finished my education. If I can do it earlier, like before finishing high school, I would jump at the opportunity. I am planning to ask our local clinic if they accept high school volunteers who just want to gain hands-on experience. I hope that such an internship will give me the opportunity to really understand what vet techs do and how my skill set can contribute to the profession. Helping animals is something I see myself doing long-term and I want to spend the next few years preparing for it.

One thing that I will find extremely difficult is handling small animals in critical care. I am easily affected by animal patients who are already fragile and have a make-or-break case. I find that I get emotionally attached because I love animals. Being able to balance emotions and logic is going to be a steep learning curve.

Conclusion

To work with animals would be the most wonderful privilege and responsibility I can accept. I have two years until senior year, and I feel excited about all the things I’ll learn in this future career. There will be exceedingly difficult days, but I will do my best to always be a great asset to the team.  I will aim to be completely dedicated to the profession and be the smart assistant that any licensed veterinarian needs.

I hope that I will be able to provide the best kind of care to animals and support to their human families. While I may not be able to make them stop worrying about their pets, I can assure them that we will do everything we can to help their animals get better and go home healthy and well.

Career As A Veterinary Technician Essay (Short Essay Sample)

Taking animals to the vet clinic is usually a nerve-wracking experience for both the pet and his or her owner, but this hasn’t been our experience at our local clinic. Thanks to our amazing veterinarian and vet tech, we usually walk in assured and comforted and walk out happy and satisfied.

The way our doctors care for our pets is so inspiring that I want to be like them someday, specifically a veterinarian technician. I have always loved science experiments, performing tests, and analyzing the results, and I think this is a passion and skill set that would come in handy. My love for animals will serve as the core purpose and motivation for why I decided on this career path.

Working with animals excites me because I love learning how to connect with them. I think connection and relationship are important factors in becoming the kind of veterinary tech that people and pets would appreciate. I want them to know that this is not just a job for me, but a passion. I want to be the person accompanying pets to the lab to help them feel safe and secure.

FAQs on Why I Want to Be a Veterinary Technologist

❓ What Are The Pros Of Being A Vet Tech?

If you have an undeniable love for animals and enjoy spending time with them, then this is a great profession for you. Being a vet tech means you are with animals all day, which means you get to have a job that you love doing. At the same time, you have the opportunity to administer proper care to the sick or injured in a way no other person does. You get to be with them during lab work and testing, and you have the opportunity to soothe them and assure them of your presence. You also have the chance to figure out what the animal patient is suffering from and accurately test for proper diagnosis and treatment.

❓ What Are The Cons Of Being A Vet Tech?

The only con of this role is if you are not at all passionate about animals. Veterinarians work all day with pets and their human families, and if you are not fond of even touching animals, then you would struggle to stay in this career long-term. You will dread clinical work and find it hard to connect with the patients. Another con is compassion fatigue. This normally happens when we pour ourselves into others to a fault. We get tired of caring. Service-oriented workers tend to experience this. If you are easily attached to animals, you may struggle with this at one point in your career. Learning self-compassion is a must in this role.
