Why I Want to Be a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer: Exploring My Passion for Medical Sonography

My mother is one of the ultrasound technicians in the OB-Gyne clinic in our town. Every day, she would come home from work and regale us with stories from her day at work. She loves connecting with parents-to-be who come in excited to get to know their little one more. While not all stories end well and not all babies make it to delivery, she always comes home with a positive mindset.

Seeing how my mom is so fulfilled by her job is what makes me want to get into the healthcare industry. She always says that she is blessed to have one of the best jobs in the world. She is the first person I think of when asked what excellent patient care looks like. She knows her pivotal role in her patients’ lives so she takes every patient case seriously. No symptom is too small or insignificant.

With that in mind, my dream profession is to become a diagnostic medical sonographer like my mom. I don’t have a particular preference yet for a specific type of sonography. All I know is that I want to help patients get to the root of their medical issues.

Appreciating the Work of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers

Science has always been my favorite subject, particularly biology. I love learning how our body works and how each organ responds when there is an “invader” provoking an immune response. What attracts me to diagnostic sonography is the literal ability to see the organ of concern and to capture it in real-time. My mom, as an ultrasound tech, is adept at capturing images from the best angles to help doctors make the proper diagnosis and treatment. She also has her own initial recommendations, which she includes in the report.

Medical sonographers work long hours in a fast-paced work environment on a typical day. Given this, they need to keep their mental and physical stamina up as their work demands a lot of accuracy and sensitivity. For example, whenever my mom conducts an ultrasound, she would always take her time, unlike other diagnostic medical sonographers. She believes that it is important to wait for the best angle to capture the fetus or baby, not only to help the OB-gyne make a sound medical decision but also for the peace of mind of the parents-to-be.

Since I want to work in health care, my goal is to apply to educational institutions that will enable me to study this specific specialty and gain professional certification in no time. I also want to gain clinical experience before taking my board exam and work closely with radiologic technologists to get a closer glimpse of what a day in their life looks like. I want to be able to try my hand at various types of diagnostic imaging, such as abdominal sonography and breast sonography. Once I’m employed, I want to develop strong work ethics so that I can get along well with nurses, doctors, and fellow medical sonographers.

Conclusion

Not all people are enamored by internal organs and blood vessels, but I am one of the rare few. Seeing what is going on in a patient’s body helps give a more detailed picture of what they are going through. Diagnostic medical sonography is one of the ways in which we can get to the heart of a patient’s suffering and be able to visualize what can be done about it.

I want to be part of this aspect of the healthcare profession because I am able to directly serve patients and show them what’s really going on inside their bodies. I also want to help their physician make a good assessment based on my images and reports and act on the prognosis with a sound plan. What ultimately matters to me is that the right diagnosis is made and the proper medicine and procedures are prescribed as a result of my work. Whether I work in clinics or a hospital, my end goal of providing quality and compassionate patient care remains the same.

I hope that in entering the medical field as a sonographer, I’ll be able to help change people’s lives for the better.

Why I Want To Be A Ultrasound Technician (Short Essay Sample)

When I tell people that I want to become a medical sonographer, I am usually told, “Won’t looking at pictures all day be boring? Why don’t you get in on the action and become a physician instead?” Little do they know that diagnostic imaging fascinates me to no end.

As far back as my early teens, I have been enamored by the idea of becoming a diagnostic medical sonographer. I have always been exposed to this profession since my mom herself is an ultrasound sonographer. It was her love for her job that inspired me to want to become like her. Although I am not yet sure what kind of diagnostic imaging to specialize in, I want to master the technology and learn how to use it in different areas of the medical field.

Finally, connecting with the patient is an essential part of the job, and this is one aspect I’m equally excited about. Many patients enter the room anxious and scared, and I want to make it part of my role to help them feel at ease. The end goal is to offer peace of mind.
