They say that the most important decisions one makes in life are deeply rooted in his or her most foundational life experiences. This is certainly true for me.
I’m aiming to enter the field of welfare work. While lots of people could not quite understand why I chose a career that didn’t pay much or offer a lot of employee recognition, one could say that this is my dream job. I chose social services not because of what I could get out of it, but because of the opportunity to assist people with their basic needs.
My desire to get into this work started at a very young age, due to my personal experience. I was abandoned by my biological parents as a baby, and so I was placed in a foster home by a very kind social worker named Anne. There are a lot of horror stories about kids being passed on from one foster home to another, but Anne made sure that would never happen to me. She made sure to thoroughly get to know my foster parents well and checked in on me regularly. She would bring me treats or take me out for ice cream occasionally when she would visit.
It was because of Anne’s example that I was inspired to become a welfare worker like her.
