The Story of How Law Enforcement Officers Inspired Me to Choose the Force

More often than not, action movies tend to paint police officers in a negative light. They are usually the corrupt and selfish law enforcers with a personal agenda or stake.

Despite the many films that I have watched with this overarching theme, I still want to become a police officer. I believe that it is still possible to be part of the police force and maintain good moral character, so long as personal agendas don’t get in the way.

I have always loved the idea of upholding the law because of my uncle, who is a police officer and also a role model to me. This was his first job and I don’t think he has plans of changing careers anytime soon. I have seen how he served our community by doing a great job of maintaining public safety on a daily basis. The people in our town really respect him and his fellow officers admire him for setting a good example of what honest police work looks like.

Through my uncle’s example, I am sure that the police can make a positive impact on the communities they serve by being anchored on a meaningful purpose. I believe that criminals and other rule-breaking citizens deserve new leases on life even after committing mistakes, even when rehabilitation means jail time. Apprehending these people and allowing them to go through the system to uphold the law is a good way to enable people to take responsibility for their actions and work hard to get to a place of reintegration. In a way, it is helping people get back on their feet.

When the police department functions as it should, citizens feel safe and cared for and the crime rate goes down. Criminal justice is served when an investigation is properly carried out and evidence is treated with the utmost care and sensitivity.

As a future police officer, I consider the role more than just a job. It is actually a powerful way to protect life and the country. I can’t think of a more privileged position than a career in law enforcement to give me the platform to do this. As such, I want to pursue relevant education that equip me for police work. I am saving up to go to a police academy where I can learn all the necessary skills to do justice to the job description. I will also aim to serve the community where I’m based as a way of giving back to its members who raised me and looked after me all these years. Career advancement is a welcome bonus, but my focus is really just on helping people and protecting them.

Conclusion

When I initially shared my desire to be a police officer with my parents and other family members, they were concerned that I would be put into all sorts of dangerous situations and worried for my safety. I validated their concern, but also reminded them that I knew that while law enforcement is fulfilling and rewarding, it also comes at the cost of my own life. I knew this when I made the decision to pursue this profession. My uncle also cautioned me about this career he chose. But I am determined to weather these challenging parts of the job and make love for the community my ultimate motivation for what I do.

While there are many reasons to stay away from this type of job, I go back to the stories my uncle shared with me and I am reminded that my choosing this is about more than just the badge and the recognition. It is ultimately about looking after people, no matter the cost. It is also about redeeming the concept of law enforcement. I want to be an officer who will defy the odds and continue holding on to my values and convictions, no matter what I see and experience on the job. I hope that in becoming an officer of the law, I would be able to inspire other people to appreciate and honor police officers and all the work that they do to keep people safe.

Why I Want To Be A Police Officer Short Essay (Short Essay Sample)

Whenever I tell people that my dream job is to be a cop, I get all sorts of confused stares and sympathetic glances, as if I don’t know what I’m getting myself into. While I understand where much of the negativity comes from – no thanks to corrupt cops – I believe that a career in law enforcement can be one of the noblest career investments one can ever make.

Law enforcement will enable me to achieve one of the most important things in life: supporting people and making sure they are always safe and protected. I have seen my uncle, a police officer, bear this kind of fruit in his career, and it’s something I would also want to emulate in my own journey.

Upholding the law as an officer is one of the most misunderstood jobs in the world, largely due to stories of policemen turning corrupt and using their jobs for personal gain. My dream is to become one of the officers who will redeem this negative picture and show the community that law enforcement is really for the ultimate benefit of its members

FAQs on Why I Want to Be a Police Officer

❓ What Are The Reasons To Be A Police Officer?

Choosing a career in law enforcement can be rooted in different types of motivations: experiencing crimes and being a victim, having a relationship with or personally knowing good police officers, a burden for upholding criminal justice, a need to protect communities, or even simply having the necessary skills for success.

❓ What Are The Disadvantages Of Being A Police Officer?

The biggest enemy of this type of profession is public perception. Sadly, most people have not had a pleasant experience with policemen and so this has tainted their view of this profession. It is hard enough to secure the safety of the community entrusted to you, but what makes it more difficult is that you already have an obstacle in front of you before you even take a step. Hollywood can be partly to blame for this as they emphasize the narrative of good officers gone bad and beyond redemption. The challenge for the police department today is the prove to people that they are not all corrupt money makers and rule-breakers themselves. Another disadvantage is the high risk of injury and death. Apprehending criminals comes at a dangerous price, and there is always the possibility of getting injured or killed on the job. Any officer needs to be prepared for this type of scenario as they are likely to experience it many times throughout their career. Finally, being in this type of job can take precious time away from the family.
