Why I Dream of Getting Into the Pharmacy Profession

I remember my father getting a bad bout of the flu and being tasked to head to the nearest pharmacy at a young age. I was anxious and scared because I saw my father having a hard time with his symptoms. He had a fever, chills, cough, and a terrible cold.

No one accompanied me to the drugstore because everyone was busy trying to keep my dad comfortable. I remember my mom giving me instructions and a doctor’s prescription, and telling me to talk to a good pharmacist who can help me out. Fortunately, at the pharmacy I went to, a warm and caring pharmacist greeted me at the counter. He immediately asked me if I had a prescription. I quickly explained to him that my dad had the flu and needed some medicine. He immediately went to get what I needed and wished my father well. He even took the time to explain what each item was for, in a way that I could understand.

I wish I had made an effort to get to know his name. I may not know what he is called, but I will always remember him as a great pharmacist who helped my father. My experience with him is why I am interested in becoming a pharmacist myself.

How Pharmacists Add Value to the Healthcare System

In the health sector, the most recognized health care professionals are those that provide direct patient care in hospitals. However, I believe that pharmacists save lives on a daily basis without them knowing or ever getting in contact with the patient.

Pharmacists are commonly found in drug stores, whether stand-alone facilities, inside hospitals or nursing homes, even schools. They dispense the proper and accurate amount of medication to customers based on a legitimate doctor’s prescription. They provide counseling on specific types of medicine as well, such as birth control or the morning-after pill. They ensure that the correct dosages and formats of medication are given and suggest alternative medicines in case the prescriptions are not available.

Person Holding Medicines

My lifelong goal after my childhood experience is to pursue a pharmacist career. I want to be part of a medical team that concretely provides the prescribed drugs that patients need in order to heal and recover.

Despite being one of those roles that work behind the scenes, I know that pharmacists play a crucial role in the health sector and that it is a rewarding career if I am confident in my purpose. My aim is to take this track in college and accrue knowledge through research on how this profession can change one life after another. I want to learn about the different types of medications and how I can ensure that these are properly administered and used.

One of the skills that I know I would need to work on in pursuing this career is how to communicate effectively. My communication skills need a lot of fine-tuning as I am naturally an introvert and shy away from prolonged conversations with people. I know that pharmacists talk to people from different walks of life every day and need to be able to adjust their language for each one to ensure a solid understanding of the medications. I am hoping to take an elective course in college that tackles this specific skill set.

Conclusion

I am convinced that getting into the healthcare profession by becoming a pharmacist is an inspiring and good career route for me. While I need to work on several skills that are important in pharmacy services, I am willing to put in the work so that I can experience success in this field, and also provide quality patient care.

I hope that by providing professional help to people who are sick and hurting, I can contribute to their quality of life and support their families in nursing them back to good health. Just as that kind pharmacist inspired me to follow in his footsteps when I was young, I hope to show other young people why this role is a platform for changing lives for the better, just on the basis of doing the job well.

More than just being a rewarding career, pharmacists play a key role in ensuring the health and wellness of the community. They work alongside other health care professionals to ensure that the correct medicine is given and administered to get patients on the road to recovery.

My motivation to become a pharmacist is more than just a career aspiration. It all started when I met one as a young person. I needed to run to the drugstore to get medicine for my dad who came down with the flu. I had a great experience at the pharmacy, as the person who received me took the time to explain the prescription and the purpose of each of the medications in a language I could understand and relay. Since then, I have always aspired to be a pharmacist.

I know that going through pharmacy school will definitely have challenges and that my first few years on the job will be a steep learning curve. However, I am determined to excel, not just for the sake of career advancement, but for the numerous patients, I will be serving from a distance.
