My Pathway to the Nursing Profession

My most life-changing encounter with a nurse practitioner was when my younger sister Ellen was diagnosed with leukemia. She was admitted into chemotherapy, and at each session, the same nurse attended to her every need. Her name was Janice.

From the very beginning, Nurse Janice was warm and kind towards Ellen. But at first, my sister refused to talk to her or reciprocate her attempts to connect with her. It was understandable, as it was hard for Ellen to accept her illness and the fact that she had to stop everything just to go through treatment and rest. But Nurse Janice persevered and consistently reached out to her in every session. She never tired of explaining the treatment and asking Ellen how she was feeling that day. Before long, Ellen and Nurse Janice became really good friends.

Ellen has been in remission for two years, and to this day, she keeps in touch with Nurse Janice. It wasn’t only Ellen who was touched by her patience and compassion. All of our family members witnessed how she made sure Ellen felt like a patient with dignity every time she went for a session. Nurse Janice is the reason why I want to have a nursing career.

I am already researching the best nursing education and nursing program in my vicinity. After taking the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), I want to gain experience in various specialties to determine the specific role I want to focus on. Right now, I am considering being either a nurse anesthetist, a critical care nurse, or a nurse midwife. I might change my mind if I encounter a specialty that I really enjoy, but regardless of focus, I choose nursing because of the opportunity to make a huge difference in patients’ lives. I believe that it’s what makes it a rewarding career.

As one of the country’s future registered nurses, I want to learn about the joys and sacrifices of health care workers. I know that saving lives comes at a huge cost and that new challenges crop up almost every day because of each unique patient that is admitted into the hospital. This is exactly why nurse practitioners play an important role in the medical field. They work alongside doctors to provide the best possible care to patients. They bridge the gap between every doctor’s visit and make sure to update the physician-in-charge after they do their rounds. A patient’s experience is largely determined by the kind of service their nurse provides since they are the health care workers they see and encounter on a daily basis.

I hope that I will do well in nursing school and get along well with fellow students, who will possibly be my colleagues one day. One of the nursing skills I want to master during my schooling is how to communicate effectively. I tend to be a people-pleaser, so it’s hard for me to deliver bad news. I know that this is a common scenario in the profession I have chosen, so I need to be able to work on this area to become a great nurse in the future.

Conclusion

This profession may be a noble one, but it also is a challenging one. Based on the stories I’ve heard, there will be a lot of difficult times. Not all patients or families will like me either. But in the health care field, the end goal is to preserve the quality of life or do what is best for the patient and the family. Doctors won’t always present the most popular decisions, and patients may have to choose something they don’t want in the first place. As a future nurse, I want to be able to support them through the journey, especially when tough calls are made.

I hope that in taking care of each patient compassionately, people who end up in the hospital gain a meaningful experience. Healthcare is more than about diagnosis and treatment. It is also treating patients with kindness, no matter how unpleasant they can get. My ultimate dream is to make a difference in the lives of the people I treat and the families who visit them.

Essays On Becoming A Nurse (Short Essay Sample)

With nursing being constantly in high demand, people ask me why I still want to become a nurse when there are already so many of them. I think that the world could always use more registered nurses who genuinely care for people, and I believe that I am a person who can bring that specific quality to the table.

I was inspired to become a practitioner because of my sister, Ellen. When she was diagnosed with leukemia years ago, she had a regular nurse who made sure to attend to Ellen’s every need. More than this, I saw how she sought to befriend Ellen, who was initially disinterested and consumed by her illness. I want to cultivate the same compassion she showed towards my sister. This is the kind of medical practitioner I want to become.

I can’t deny that this field is laden with difficulties, and oftentimes, the work goes unnoticed or is dismissed as a simple list that needs to be checked off every day. But I have a passion for helping people through my skill, and I believe that the best way to apply it is to pursue nursing.
