Why I Want to Go to Cosmetology School

For as long as I can remember, I have been conscious of my looks. I would always notice if my hair looks extra-frizzy, or my nails look dull and lifeless. Needless to say, this would affect my self-confidence and even my ability to connect with other people.

Once she realized that this lack of self-love was causing my inability to thrive in life, my older sister took me to her favorite hair salon and asked her regular stylist to give me a makeover. Not only did I receive several hair treatments, but nail technicians also came over to give me manicures and pedicures. Once I was done, I realized that I am more beautiful than I think I am and resolved to one day help other women feel the way I felt that day: strong, attractive, and confident.

Woman Getting a Haircut

This is why becoming a cosmetologist is so important to me. It is more than a career choice. It is a decision from my end to add value to the lives of women from many different ethnic groups and show them the ways they can look after themselves. I want to be a skilled specialist who is not only good at styling techniques but also knows how to listen and speak to the client’s heart.

I am fortunate to have a couple of cosmetology schools nearby to choose from. That way, I won’t have to leave my neighborhood to get into beauty colleges. I want to study this field right after high school and get on the fastest track to attain a cosmetology license. The goal is to eventually put up my own mini salon that specializes in all kinds of hair types and complexions to cater to people from all backgrounds.

Of course, as I study cosmetology, I want to explore different cosmetology services such as scalp treatments, cutting hair, hair color, hair styling, and even nail art. I am interested to know if there is a specific technique I will particularly excel in. I also want to intern at a hair salon to familiarize myself with the business and pursue my passion for it. If my family and friends are willing, I would want to practice with them once I have developed good skills and techniques.

My Vision for My Own Salon

First of all, I want my own salon to be inclusive. I want to serve many different ethnic groups who are especially under-represented in the beauty industry. I also want to partner with various cosmetics firms that share the same vision for inclusivity so that I can offer and use their products in my salon.

Woman Curling Another Woman's Hair

I dream of having solutions for many different hair types, especially the kinds that make a client feel hopeless. I want them to see that there is always something that we can do to make their hair more beautiful. I want to boost the confidence of every client who comes in – from the little girl about to get her first haircut to the grandmother looking to do something different with her hairstyle to hide her thinning gray hair.

Finally, I want to make personal interaction the central experience of my salon. Most cosmetologists just want to get the job done so that they can go on a break, but I want to be a safe space for people to be comfortable in their own skin, even before the treatment starts. Whether it’s tips on skincare, hair care, or makeup, I want to engage every person who is served in a good conversation.

Conclusion

Just as beauty services changed my life and my perception of myself, I want to remind people that they are innately beautiful, and that hair salons are simply there to bring out their brand of beauty.

I hope that I will be the kind of cosmetologist that will enable people to come out looking not just more beautiful than they did walking in, but also more confident and assured. I am convinced that hair salons exist for more than just shallow beautification. They should also be deep and profound reminders of your worth as a person and what you deserve.

What Inspired You To Pursue Beauty As A Career Essay (Short Essay Sample)

There is one simple reason why I dream of going to cosmetology school and pursuing a career in the beauty industry: hair styling changed my life as a young person.

I was once very self-conscious to the point of self-sabotage. I would downplay my beauty and let it affect my confidence in other areas of my life. My sister noticed my silent cry for help and took me to a beauty salon. Her stylist treated me to a slew of treatments for my hair and nails. She didn’t change my look; she simply enhanced what was already there. Seeing this difference upon looking at myself in the mirror convinced me that a career in cosmetology would be a great platform to encourage people in the same way that I was empowered that day.

My ultimate dream is to empower people to know and embrace their true worth through their physical features. A lot of self-doubts, particularly for women, start at the physical level. If left unaddressed, the physical consciousness manifests in their inner narrative. I want to be the person that changes their narrative for the better.
