Why Do I Want To Pursue A Career In the Health Care Industry?

The health care industry is growing rapidly, as many of its career offerings are in high demand amongst job seekers. From serving the aging population or working as a pharmacist to becoming a nurse practitioner or one of many specialist doctors, the need for more people to invest in patient care is increasing by the day.

I am one of the high school students who are hoping to get into a healthcare career one day. As a little girl, I have watched my parents change the lives of people as practicing physicians, and I would like to do the same.

In this article, I would like to share the major reasons why I want to get into the healthcare field and what my plans are to get into the field that I truly desire.

I want to make a difference, just like my parents

More than the job security, my primary reason for wanting a future in the health care field is the ability to touch people’s lives. I remember when I was younger, my parents would always take the entire family to the children’s cancer ward during the holidays to spread some Christmas cheer. My mother is a pediatric oncologist, so she knows all of the children who are admitted there for chemotherapy and other cancer treatments. I saw how her little patients loved seeing her and were easily uplifted by her presence. Her being there during the most wonderful time of the year meant the world to them. I knew right then and there that if this was going to be my profession, I would be doing it for more than the prestige or growth.

There is plenty of room for growth in a health career

That being said, there is so much to go forward on when it comes to health sciences. No matter your field of specialization, there is always an opportunity to expand your knowledge as the medical field continues to evolve and change with the times. What I love about medicine is that there is room to innovate and always think of a better way to provide patient care, with the discovery of new things. I have seen my mother rave over an experimental new cancer treatment that seems to be working well in her patient. I have seen my father spend hours in a lab conducting research. This is a field for people with a passion for lifelong learning, and this is a quality I have even now as a student.

Practicing medicine is an education in kindness

While I don’t have a certain area of medicine that I want to pursue just yet, my parents always say that healthcare workers spend the rest of their careers learning how to be kind. When you’re dealing with all kinds of patients and new people, you will be put in a position to learn how to speak each of their languages. Working in the hospital is a stressful job, which can challenge your mental and emotional health; which in turn, affects the way you treat the people around you. With this, there is always a daily challenge to practice kindness to the people you are working with or serving, no matter how bad a day you’re having.

Pursuing health careers sharpens your life skills

There is so much more to these health care jobs than just good pay, stable employment, and employee support programs. As you dedicate your life to helping patients and their families, you yourself are changed. My mom told me that as a doctor, she never expected her patients and her career to teach her how to be a humble and practical person, and how to think critically and apply sound wisdom to decisions. When she makes rounds in different hospitals, she meets many people who will unintentionally teach her something new that she can apply to her life. Even in her pre-med program, her mentor taught her class to expect to be a student as much as a healer in this profession.

Helping people is my passion

I think that ultimately, I inherited my parents’ compassion for other people. I have always loved extending help to our neighbors and friends when I knew they were going through something. I would brainstorm with my family in thinking of ways to assist or offer comfort. I think that patient care is something that I will excel in because this is already an inherent burden. I want to advance my genuine intention to uplift the life of another, and I believe that the health care field is the perfect platform to help me achieve that. I see it not just as a career, but as an opportunity to follow my dreams in a purposeful and concrete way.

I want to help healthcare workers and alleviate their workload

While labor statistics show the incredible need for more practitioners, it also implies the urgent reality that more of them need to be deployed to health institutions. In some areas, there is a consistent shortage of workers compared to the number of patients coming in. I want to help ease the load by becoming a health professional myself. I’m not yet particular on whether I want to work in a hospital or in the clinic, or even outside a medical facility. But I am also considering volunteering to go on medical missions and providing relief where it is most needed.

Conclusion

I hope that I have been able to articulate how much I love the medical field. I want to follow in my parent’s footsteps and leave my own legacy for the future generations of health professionals. But my main focus today as a student is to qualify for a pre-med course in a renowned school and maximize the education that I will be blessed with so that I can give back when I finally become a licensed physician.

I want to wrap up this piece by honoring our health care workers. I often hear from my parents that they have thankless jobs, even if they are not doing it for the affirmations. I know that this means that there are many tired, stressed, and discouraged workers who work long hours, day in and day out, with no appreciation whatsoever. If you are one of those workers reading this today, hats off to you.

I look forward to the journey of chasing a medical career, just like my mom and dad. I am grateful that they showed me the way through their lives and professions, and I look forward to doing the same for the younger ones who will come after me. I dream of a medical field sector where every physician, nurse, technical specialist, and administrator are fully happy and content in their jobs and are continuously working to provide the best care for patients and their loved ones. I long to see hospitals and other facilities thriving as more people invest in these institutions, and in the needed areas of research to ensure that innovation continues. Health care may be a tough and challenging job choice, but it can be a rewarding one.
