Creationism vs Evolution (Essay Sample)

Creationism vs Evolution

The creation vs evolution is an ongoing, recurring and theological dispute about the Earth and life’s origins. Therefore, it has been a controversial issue for decades. Both sides have different arguments with the creationists believing that concepts and designs require a creator. Applying the principles of designing on living things, the creationists find a base of believing that there exists a creator or designer. Generally, creationists hold that organisms were created as single and different creatures while the evolutionists believe that life began from a single organism which evolved later into the complex organisms that changed over time into various animals. The evolutionists base their arguments from the evolution principals that hold that a continuous evolution may lead to the development of distinct organisms. On the other hand, the creationists hold that organisms are only able to adapt to their environment, but lack the abilities to change over time to distinct organism than they were initially created. In considering all the available arguments from both sides, I conclude that both camps can be accepted or combined.

A wide range of evidence exists in support of evolution. The most prominent and common one is the existence of fossil records. The existence of sedimentary rocks makes the study of fossils easy in the different layers. Each layer holds fossils from million years. Scientists have found transitional traits among the older and newer species. The bottom line, fossils demonstrate the existence of the intermediate species between original and the ones that exist now supporting the claim that organisms have the abilities of evolving into distinct species.

Another argument supporting the evolution theory is the similarities among all organisms on earth both anatomically and chemically. This argument is supported by the existence of amino acids in all living things on earth. Scientists have demonstrated that all living organisms contain 20 amino acids of the same kind. This is evident in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells demonstrating the relationship between animals (multicellular organisms) and bacteria (single celled organisms). The anatomical structure is another similarity between living organisms. Scientists have demonstrated most animals have the same body and bone structure implying that this was inherited from a common ancestor. The best example is the human arm bones especially the radius, humerus and ulna; cats and dogs’ forelegs; wings on birds; and flippers on whales that share the same bones. This similarity implies that this was either inherited from a common ancestor or underwent the same process to develop them supporting the evolution theory.

Another argument by the evolutionists is the genetic changes in organisms over time. The earth is in a continuous change and when these changes become too much to an extent that organisms cannot handle them, most of the species die. Those that survive in these harsh conditions will reproduce with their traits becoming superior in the existing population. This is evolution since the resulting species have evolved supporting the evolution theory.

In a manner of speaking, creationism is a religious concept that holds that the universe was created by God because He is the only one who has the powers to do so. The creationist camp base their evidence on the Bible specifically Genesis. Their major argument against the evolutionists is that there are large gaps in the theory especially in the fossil record evidence. However, studies have indicated that these gaps are due to incomplete data collection. The more transitional fossil evidence that is found, the more the gaps start being filled up. An example is the fossil records that connects humans with apes due to the discovery of transitional fossil records that have been found in the African continent over the past few centuries.

Since it is not good to have two systems explaining the same phenomenon, both camps have been attempting to find a common ground between their rival believes. Therefore, it is due to this (finding a common ground between their rival believes) that has been a hard task between the theologians and scientists. However, it is because of this daunting task that both sides seem to be forgetting one perspective that does not have any contradiction. It is more likely that God planned everything, certain developmental elements of the universe might have been prepared by God and pressed a metaphysical button that let His ideas evolve as He watches the results. Another perspective that has not been considered by both camps is the possibility of God creating life and letting it find its own ways of surviving. Besides these two perspective, various contradictory arguments can be suggested; anyway it does not make sense having two points explaining the most complex and incomprehensible issue in the universe.

The clash between the two camps is far from ending. Both camps have come up with credible arguments that support their positions. The evolution camp holds that there is no factual evidence supporting the existence of a Supreme God pointing to fossils, genetic changes and similarities in anatomical structures as the proof of evolution theory as the proof for the origin of earth and life. On the other hand, the creation camp holds that there is no evidence linking the species found in fossil records. These opposing arguments from both sides is what keeps the debate rolling and the task of finding a common ground more difficult. However, besides the evidence and conclusions about creationism and evolution, they need to be confirmed. As the evolutionists argue that there is no evidence that demonstrates that God created the universe out of nothing in six days as documented in the Bible as believed among the creationists, they too cannot demonstrate that fossil records, genetic changes and anatomical structure similarities are what happened in the past. Therefore, this is the reason as to why the debate continues to establish which side is correct.

When we come to the general world and leave the two camps aside, a certain percentage believe in evolution, other believe in creationism while part of it is unsure on what to believe in. The unsure percentage believe that besides the occurrence of evolution, it is guided by God who has the Supreme powers to govern the universe. This small percentage provides a new perspective that may lead to a common ground between the two conflicting camps. Since, both sides does not see any ground in which their views can coexist, the neutral camp holds that both perspectives cannot only coexist, but be combined in a successful manner. This combination will explain the existence of the earth and life. However, based on the evidence provided from both camps, I conclude that we either accept both sides or combine them to form a common ground.
