It is safe to say that we live in a progressive time. We are slowly unlearning hurtful stereotypes and opening ourselves up to new and fresh perspectives. In all spheres of society, we are seeing some headway in terms of diversity, speech, collaboration, and equality.

However, one of the key demographics that is continuously facing inequalities is women. This is not to say that there hasn’t been improvement in this area, but there continue to be scenarios in which these individuals, regardless of social class, still experience some sort of discrimination or suffer from a hurtful pre-established notion – and many of us turn a blind eye to it.

In this essay, I would like to share some of the challenges faced by women today, and what can possibly be done about them.

Gender Pay Gap

One would think that we should have solved this issue by now, but working women continue to witness a significant difference in compensation from men who are in similar roles. This extends to even Hollywood celebrities, as some of the silver screen’s biggest stars have come out to say how they have been victims of gender discrimination even in their own glamorous jobs.

Women in leadership roles experience the brunt of this issue as well. For some reason, the world still finds it difficult to accept that a female voice can lead and that women leaders can be just as, if not more effective than men. There is a pre-established notion that a female leader can be too “soft,” and that an iron hand is needed in order to maintain order. As such, unequal pay continues to be a problem in this modern world.

I think it is high time that we call out the issue of gender inequality in the workplace. We need to advocate for equal pay, and for each person to be paid according to his or her level of competence and contribution. This applies to not only women but other disadvantaged members of society.

Workplace Harassment

Slowly but surely, the definition of workplace harassment is evolving for the better. Whereas before, the harassment had to have some physical aspect to it that one can prove, today, even catcalling by male employees can be considered as such. Of course, the most extreme variant is sexual harassment. Many successful and educated women in the work force become victims of gender discrimination by their male counterparts, with some incidents even leading to sexual abuse. The sad reality is that most of these happen behind closed doors, where male leaders use career growth as a bribe or a threat to women who resist their advances.

We need an increasing awareness of how often this is happening in offices all over the country. We need to highlight how this affects job opportunities afforded to talented women, and how those in high positions can play a part in telling the outside world about the importance of teaching male leaders how to protect women under their wing.

Gender Roles

To this day, females are continually subjected to false narratives about their roles in society. Men continue to insist that they only belong in the traditional roles of child-bearer and doer of household chores. Pregnant women are constantly judged when people find out that they plan to continue climbing the corporate ladder after their maternity leaves. At the same time, full-time moms who plan on coming back to work are sometimes welcomed back with lower wages, with supervisors assuming that they will not be able to contribute as much in their roles anymore. They eventually find out that they are not paid equally as their counterparts.

All the more today, it is extremely pivotal to start a conversation on equal rights and gender equality. We must champion every woman who continues to push for success despite the different transitions and challenges they’ve faced, instead of answering them with lower pay. More women deserve to be given a chance to succeed, even as they transition into family life.

Domestic Violence

Perhaps the most brutal of them all, domestic violence continues to be the silent assassin of many women at home. Both wives and young girls can be victims of physical and emotional abuse, and they are threatened with their lives when they attempt to talk or ask for help. The usual culprits are men – fathers, brothers, and relatives who treat women like objects. They use abuse to get what they want – from female sex and marital rape. The victims continue on with their two-faced lives – outside, they appear happy, satisfied, and loved, but at home, they lose their spark and their hope.

Another cause of domestic abuse is sex trafficking. There is an entire consumer industry revolving around the trafficking of vulnerable females and children. Those who are often recruited to this illegal business are the underprivileged ones from the rural areas who need the money for their families. They want to make more money faster, and so will offer their bodies as a means to get that extra income. Unfortunately, what young women think will be a temporary situation can become a dangerous scenario wherein they experience daily sexual harassment. Some of them are even forced into child marriage, as a way of securing them to their owners legally and permanently.

Conclusion: Stand Up for Women Issues

I believe that a women’s movement needs to emerge, calling out society for being a silent perpetrator of all of these problems that females face. We need to come up with national activities that can generate awareness and drive the general public to action. We also need our leaders to collaborate and lay down stricter policies and tougher punishments for highly unethical issues. If these are implemented properly, perhaps the world will see even more that we take every woman’s worth seriously. Right now, all we have are great speeches and laws that are not properly or consistently enacted.

Women face problems every day that men will never be able to experience or completely understand. If men became a major source of support to the causes that champion equal opportunity in all areas of society, perhaps people will listen more attentively. Imagine if what used to be the major source of discrimination suddenly became the strongest champions of the individuals they used to look down on.

Inside every woman are amazing talents, gifts, and unique skill sets that would add so much value to the world, if only we would let them. I hope to see future days when every woman is treated as an equal – at home, at work, in the government, and in all public spheres. I believe that when we can recognize women’s work as important and essential to the betterment of our world, then that is the only time that we can truly progress towards a kinder and fairer time.
