Journal Title: Architecture Design Approach for IoT-based Farm Management Information Systems
Article Summary
The article attempts to design an IoT-based farm management information system (FMIS) that might be adopted by architects designing these systems to meet individual objectives for farmers and businesses. To help achieve this goal, the researchers conduct design-driven research that features domain analysis to prototype specific requirements of smart farming. Additionally, the article describes the steps of modeling approaches based on FMIS and IoT reference architectures using two case studies: a smart greenhouse in Antalya and another smart wheat production farm in Konya, Turkey.
In the introduction section, the authors highlight the importance of information and communication technology in agriculture while referencing previous studies that support their hypothesis. Critical farm functions such as prescription, satellite, and precision farming were mentioned as some of the significant elements in smart farming techniques that help reduce environmental impact and increase productivity and economic returns. The authors also highlighted the importance of smart farming in this section accentuating advantages such as optimization of production efficiency, crop quality, resource conservation, and provision of better management decisions. While they talked about the importance of smart farming to introduce the relationship between agriculture and technology, the authors revisited their thesis statement by indicating that proper FMIS designs should have functional and quality requirements such as high-security levels and low development costs.
In the body section, the authors proposed the development of modern FMIS designs for the two case studies in Antalya tomato production greenhouses and Konya’s wheat farms. They introduced significant contributions of the two regions to Turkey’s economy in relation to their levels of production and exports. Additionally, the two cases were selected based on their differences and relevance regarding their quality and functionality requirements. While discussing the importance of introducing new FMIS into Turkey’s agricultural system, the article highlights problems of the previous traditional system, which resulted in in...
