The research article I chose is titled international perspectives on nonpharmacological best practices for dementia family caregivers. The article discusses the need for increased awareness around care of patients with dementia, and highlights that physician and caregiver knowledge is greatly lacking in this area. With our increasing population size and growing size of the elderly population, we are in need of solutions to the problem arising of how to care for elderly family members or patients who have dementia. I appreciate that the article discusses how dementia is not a consequence of aging: the article highlights the fact that this is part of the knowledge deficit surrounding this issue, along with a lack of knowledge of early warning signs and early intervention needed to decrease the severity of the disease progression. Various evidence-based programs are highlighted in this article, including ways to alleviate caregiver stress (changes to daily routines, emphasizing taking time to care for themselves, guided imagery or reframing, individual or group therapy, support groups, respite care) and various technologies that are currently being used, or in the development stages (web-based or mobile based resources, including meeting with a provider on a program such as Skype, access to electronic health records and electronic resources for caregivers, ability to interact with healthcare team members over the phone or via text messaging; new technologies such as mobile phone apps to send out an alert for those at risk of elopement). The researchers highlight the need for further investigation into programs such as these, that focus on reducing caregiver stress, increasing caregiver knowledge, and increasing general knowledge and awareness of dementia, in order to best identify early signs of dementia, best treatment options for early and late stages of the disease, and strategies to help families be able to provide the care they want to their parents or relatives. I think this article is a great resource for both nurses and family members, as it shows that there are resources out there to help keep their relatives at home for their care, and also resources for the caregiver themselves, so they do not feel so overwhelmed or alone in their struggles.
