This course examines literacy learning for children from birth through 8 years in the context of equity, social justice, diversity and inclusion. Students examine theoretical foundations of early literacy learning including: ways to develop oral and print literacy, family literacy practices, home languages, book genres, approaches to teaching and learning, and strategies for critical literacy. Concepts of multimodalities and multiple literacies are explored to broaden the notion of what is literacy in the 21st century.
ASSIGNMENT: PERSONAL LITERACY PROFILE AND CRITICAL REFLECTION (20%)
---Reflect on personal experiences and examine critically current beliefs that may impact on literacy practice.
This assignment is to have you think about your own literacy experiences, link them to your beliefs about language and literacy teaching and learning, and to initially begin to answer the question: What is literacy? This will provide an overview of your literacy experiences, and questions/concerns.

Part 1
Please re-type the questions. 4 pages double-spaced. Please write a response to the following questions in detail. NO extra resource needed (i.e., one good paragraph, 6-8 sentences per question):

In this part of the assignment, you will reflect critically on the profile you have created and write about what has resonated with you, surprised, impacted on you? What has shaped your literacy understanding to this point in your studies? 2 pages double-spaced.
Points to consider: • Do you think that your early experiences with literacy have shaped your personal reading style, choices of what to read, and amount that you read for pleasure today? • What experiences with young children or specifically in an ECE setting surprised you, concerned you or that you simply had not experienced in your own process as a learner? • What sorts of things have you observed that inspire you or that you would like to integrate into your own teaching of young children? • What other reflections do you have, professional or personal?

Part 1
Literacy refers to an individual’s confidence and ability to write, read, acquire knowledge, and use the language to communicate effectively in all realms of life. A child’s literacy journey begins when he or she is born. Children’s literacy abilities are nurtured by community and family members. For example, a child cries or smiles to communicate with his or her parents. As the toddler grows, he or she knows her first words, interpret symbols, and starts singing songs. Literacy experiences entail things that a child comes through as she or he grows up from infancy to eight years in a context of diversity, inclusion, social justice, and equity.
I can describe myself as an effective reader. I understand that one must know how to read materials to communicate with others. When I was a young child, I struggled with reading compound words. However, my parents helped me to master different words since they read and narrated stories to me. After a short period of joining elementary school, I started reading folk tales on myself. Currently, I am the best reader.
An individual cannot become a good writer without first mastering proper reading skills. As such, I can describe myself as an excellent writer. In particular, I can write stories or essays that are comprehensible. I have learned that effective writing skills enable a person to come up with papers that communicate with readers. Moreover, I stick to the given topic of discussion or the primary theme of the story. I also include a thesis statement in my paper and support it with proper arguments in the body section.
Since I enjoy reading inspirational stories, I like the novel “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Peale. Recently, I read the book and acquired various critical teachings. The reason why I enjoyed reading Peale’s book is that it teaches one how to be optimistic in life. I can invite others to read the novel above and understand that life is all about positive thinking. The way people think significantly influences their actions. As such, it is always good to be optimistic.
I choose the books to read depending on the lessons I want to acquire, the questions to answer, or the subject of discussion. For this reason, before choosing any book, I come up with a list of different readings with almost the same theme. Afterward, I read their synopsis and identify the book that covers the main subject appropriately. At this point, I narrow my search to ensure that I get the most appropriate one. In the end, I remain with about three books. I review them all and further select the one that aligns with my primary theme or subject.
My earliest memories of reading a book are based on the “Little Red Riding Hood” by Dona Herweck Rice. At first, I did not comprehend the book well. I had to reread it several times. The book was my favorite since it enabled me to believe that monsters exist. I could figure myself being the little girl who was deceived by the wolf. However, it made me improve my reading and comprehension skills.
