In this article, Stephanie Pappas endeavors to demonstrate how psychologists can play an essential role in supporting patients who have been sexually abused. The author believes that psychologists can assist their patients in navigating the challenging process that survivors encounter while attempting to cope with an assault. Pappas acknowledges that sexual assault is a disruptive event in someone’s life. It can shatter the feelings of trust for the victims and trigger struggles within their relationships. Society stigmatizes sexual assault, so survivors may be unwilling to reach out for social support. Pappas indicates the need for providers treating people who have been sexually assaulted to understand the many barriers that their clients have to overcome and open up.
Pappas demonstrates the need for providers to assist their clients in dealing with complex issues surrounding sexual assault. These include unsupportive friends and family, circumstances where the perpetrator remains in the survivor's life, and the trauma associated with the horrific experience. The author contends that limited access to mental health services means that survivors of assault do not seek medical attention until they have been victimized many times. Psychologists need to understand that sometimes family members support the abuse rather than the one abused. It is also challenging for survivors to share their experiences with others.
