This article by Shiv Sudhakar reiterates the findings of a study that found loneliness and unhappiness to be catalysts of the aging process. Various factors, including the environment, marital status, lifestyle, and smoking, determine the aging process of individuals. Birthdates determine every person's chronological age. However, the aging process is faster for some people due to various factors that affect biological age. Psychological factors hasten the aging process more than smoking (Sudhakar). According to Dr. Fedor Galkin, who works at Deep Longevity in Hong Kong, loneliness and unhappiness increase an individual’s biological age by up to one year and eight months.
Molecular damage happens cumulatively as we grow older, resulting in disease incidence. Our genetic makeup determines our aging clock depending on our environment and lifestyle. Data obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) enabled scientists to develop an aging clock. CHARLS contains data on Chinese adults above 45 years, including their biometrics, socioeconomic status, health records, and blood panels (Zhou et al. 155). Among the East Asian countries, china is considered to have the lowest fraction of successful agers. For this reason and due to the high population, researchers found China ideal for the study.
The Rowe and Khan concept describes successful aging as having high social, physical, and psychological functioning with no significant disability or disease at the age of 65 years and above.
