Teaching Summary for Fish Biology

Article Critique Instructions:

Read the following article, and then write a teaching summary based on the following instructions:
The purpose is to generate an instructional/teaching summary
based on an individual peer reviewed journal article (journal publication).
• The paper/journal publications for each assignment is provided
• The assignment will be no more than two (2) pages SINGLE SPACED in length.
• The assignment MUST BE in own words
• The assignment will communicate information that might include
1. A brief preamble for context (background information)
2. Reasons/s for the study
3. Experimental approach/es taken
4. Results and conclusion/s of the study etc.
• The idea is to produce a 2 page document that could be used to instruct/teach the topic (journal
article content) to a 4th year class of fish biology students.

Teaching Summary for Fish Biology
Background Information
The study addresses the metamorphosis of the Summer Flounder, one of the marine fish located on the East Coast of the US. Metamorphosis is a critical process in fish and involves a biological process that changes the animal's physical appearance after hatching or bath. It is also a character transformation through stages in animals. Like any other amphibian, metamorphosis is a common process in fish but unique depending on the species (Schreiber and Jennifer 156). Metamorphosis in Summer Flounder (Paralichthys dentus) is significant since it uniquely happens and provides learners with adequate knowledge to understand the whole metamorphosis process in amphibians. Metamorphosis in Summer Flounder occurs in two types of environments, East Coast and estuarine waters. The eggs are drifted in East Coast and are transported to estuarine waters after a few months. Every learner must note that the metamorphosis occurs during winter and spring. There is no known duration for the metamorphosis in summer flounder.
More studies are necessary to identify the specific duration for the metamorphosis. Metamorphosis in Summer Flounder is also significant since it is based on external environmental effects. The primary process that every learner must understand during the metamorphosis is the dorsal fin extension and shift of the right eye to the left side. The process is also unique while using the culture methods since metamorphosis occurs within two months, maintaining symmetry for one month (Schreiber and Jennifer 156). There is no clear role of thyroid hormone in the process, and the study will adequately indicate its role upon alteration in specific stages. Thyroid hormones play other vital roles in amphibians and may be induced when it is absent. Most amphibians require thyroid hormones for larval development. Therefore, with adequate knowledge of Summer Flounder, metamorphosis and thyroid hormones, it is easy to understand the effects of its alternation at each stage.
Reasons for the Study
The main reason for the study is to understand the correlation between metamorphosis and thyroid hormone in Summer Flounder. It is essential to gain such knowledge since it would allow the learner to appreciate the role of thyroid hormones in unique amphibians such as Summer Flounders. It is also vital since it would clear different doubts in Summer Flounder metamorphosis.
The second reason for the study is altering the thyroid hormone at each specific stage of metamorphosis. The knowledge in the public domain is that the thyroid hormone heavily assists in metamorphosis; however, many learners do not understand its role in each stage. The study will offer an adequate opportunity to relate the hormone to each stage of development.
Lastly, the learners would understand the necessity of the hormone in completing metamorphosis. Based on the previous research, many biologists argue that the hormone initiates the process but does not complete it. The study reveals whether the hormone initiates metamorphosis and completes it or not. Therefore, the study is significant since it promotes an adequate understanding of metamorphosis in amphibia...
