Cavanaugh, Joseph K., and Stephen J. Jacquemin. "A large sample comparison of grade-based student learning outcomes in online vs. face-to-face courses." Online Learning Journal [OLJ], vol. 19, no. 2, 2015.
The researchers in this article, Joseph K. Cavanaugh and Stephen J. Jacquemin, both professors at Wright State University sought to compare grade-based learning outcomes between students who were enrolled in face-to-face course formats and those engaged in online course formats. Previous investigations have concluded that grade-based learning outcomes for both course formats are the same. However, given the small samples or a lack of demographic and academic controls used in research investigations, the authors utilized a large sample comprising of a large dataset to increase the reliability and accuracy of theirs findings. The authors address education professionals, students, and institutions of higher learning in regards to the similarities in student performance despite different course formats. The authors conclude both course formats portray insignificant differences in grade-based performance between students. This article is vital in demystifying the credibility of online learning in terms of student educational performance by comparing student performance with their face-to-face counterparts.

The authors in this article, Chi-Sung Li and Beverly Irby, examined and reviewed literature concerned with online education and addressed the attractiveness, benefits, and challenges associated with this mode of education. Further, the two authors discussed some of the concerns and recommendations that arise from this educational model. In their attempt to explore and understand different areas of online education, the authors start by interrogating the popularity of the model, the reasons and unique characteristics that have contributed to its rapid growth and increasing attractiveness. Additionally, the authors address the benefits and challenges that are associated with this education mode. Lastly, the article discusses the concerns and issues raised regarding online education and finally provide suggestions and recommendations necessary for the improvement of this educational model.
