The volume of twenty-seven chapters reiterates the two branches of Commedia dell’ Arte studies: myth and history. The myth relates to how art is a consequence of popular culture acted by itinerant performers specializing in improvisation and married entirely to their selected roles. On the other hand, history relates to the commercial actors of the earlier centuries. They relied on upper-class protection and income, with leading actors often filling in the role of writers. This binary study of Commedia dell’ Arte generates new modernist and romantic facets that obtain their history. On the whole, the various chapters correct simplistic interpretations of Commedia dell’ Arte through imaginative scholarship.

The authors use two cases to examine how the creative facilitate the application of human dignity: (1) exploring Commedia dell’ Arte as a form of theatre with deep roots in Italian culture; (2) recounting a set of exercises performed with little self-direction or direction in management courses at the Darden School. In both instances, the authors underline the importance of creative arts to enhance human dignity in organizations and even expediting authentic dialogue about meaning, ethics, and values. They also suggest a link between treating others with respect, performing with poise, and the creative theatre of Commedia dell’ Arte.
