Abdullah et al. (2023) explored the relationship between indigenous values, specifically the Ubuntu principle emphasizing communal child-rearing and community responsibility, and the occurrence of child neglect in both rural and urban contexts within Ghana. Drawing upon theories of collective efficacy and social support, this research discloses that rural areas exhibit a more pronounced adherence to collective values than urban areas. Utilizing data collected from a sample of 1,100 mothers across 22 communities in Ghana, this investigation establishes a substantial connection between heightened levels of Ubuntu and a diminished likelihood of child neglect. Remarkably, this connection is particularly pronounced in rural regions. These findings underscore the pivotal role that traditional collective values play in safeguarding against child neglect in rural Ghana, emphasizing the potential effectiveness of interventions aimed at promoting and reinforcing these values, especially in communities where they are deeply ingrained.
