Association between mortality rates and medication and residential treatment after in‐patient medically managed opioid withdrawal: A cohort analysis. Addiction, 115(8), 1496–1508. https://doi.org/10.1111/add.14964
Walley et al. (2020) are analyzing the relationship between the mortality rates and residential treatment and medication that occurs after the in-patient opioid withdrawal that is managed medically. This research shows that patients who have experienced medically managed opioid withdrawal are likely to suffer from a subsequent opioid overdose. One of the reasons that there have been high cases of relapse is most people only detox without treating the chronic disease. Detox, therefore, only addresses the physical dependence for a short term. Sometimes, detox could be attributed to being worse since the relapse is usually worse. The patients should, therefore, receive detox and further in-patient treatment after detox.
