Personal Statement
When I was about 12 years old, my great-grand father Griffith kicked the bucket and left me something that altered my life: photograph albums of an estimated seven thousand photos that he had taken throughout his career as a photographer. I spent some of my best days arranging and admiring his photos. Since then, I have wanted to become a photographer.
My career goal in life is to work as a commercial photographer and take photographs that effectively communicate the ideas and capture the needs of the customer. I would like to be able do a variety of things as a commercial photographer. For example, I would like to photograph new buildings for construction trade publications, photograph industrial equipment for an organization’s yearly report, and photograph models for a fashion magazine. In addition, I want to be able to take publicity photographs for organizations and companies, take photos for advertising firms to utilize in their television and/or print adverts, or even photos for engineers to utilize in their instructional manuals. All in all, I wish to specialize in taking photos of products, buildings, landscapes, personnel, and even materials, and produce work that appears in industrial materials, reports, advertising, books plus other commercial media products.
I want to pursue a degree in Commercial Photography Major at Ohio University because this would prepare me to reach my career goal in life. The program would impart me with the pertinent skills and knowledge that I need to follow a career in the field of commercial photography and take pictures for commercial use, for instance in product placement, merchandising, and advertisements. The degree program would also instil in me the skills that I need to be business-savvy if I freelance in commercial photography. What I want to gain from this school is mastery of both analogue and digital photography equipment as well as mastery in computer programs related to photography. Furthermore, I want the school to develop my skills in commercial photography for instance by emphasizing on the business side of the industry and technical facet of photography. Some of the main skills that I hope to gain which would help me in my future career as a commercial photographer are a creative eye as well as the capability of translating an artistic vision into memorable images. In addition, I want to be able to develop a unique style.
