While society integrates people who share certain aspects such as culture and descent, sustenance is primarily determined by economic factors. Therefore, several approaches have been employed to define and analyze the financial status of societies. Different models have been constructed to improve the economic welfare of others. Such endeavors have generated popular concepts such as capitalism, communism, socialism, and Marxism, which have become integral in the definition of economic social organizations. Another necessary consequence is categorizing the individual members of the society because society is ultimately the amalgamation of its constituent parts. Thus, determining and examining these categories as proposed by the prominent contributors on the subject is fundamental.
Robespierre utilizes the subject of subsistence farming or rather production to establish the existing social classes in the society. Interestingly, his categorization flows naturally from his keen address of the matter. The categories readily available in this context include landowners, merchants, monopolists, legislators, and the French people. These are critical in the management of subsistence products. According to Robespierre, the landowners or the cultivators are primarily responsible for the production (4). They generate agricultural products that are essentially meant for feeding society. On the other hand, the merchants distribute the products to serve the community as per the needs. These arguments are not only influential, but also determinative of the dominant perspectives.
Nonetheless, the greed for more significant returns may push merchants to indulge in unethical and unscrupulous dealings. While earning the merchants more revenue, such trades are hazardous to the consumers. The unscrupulous merchants function best as monopolists when there are absolutely no restrictions in their practice. The monopolists typically control the market by managing market prices in their favor and depriving society of subsistence goods to facilitate exports. Thus, the legislature is essential because it establishes the guidelines under which trade may be conducted. Robespierre states that “the greatest service a legislator can render men is to force them to be honest men” (5). Thus, noting that Robespierre does not encourage discrimination against merchants is essential. He instead asserts that they have the right to hones profit.
The legislature’s role in society is more clarified and expounded in the submission of senator James Henry Hammond on the State of Kansas’ admission. Just as in Robespierre, the legislature exists to promote the welfare of the people. Nonetheless, the portrayal of the “people” is slightly distinct in the two instances. While Robespierre depicted the “people” as weak and unfortunate, senator Hammond views the PEOPLE as sovereign (Hammond 2). The legislature is only awarded a portion of this sovereignty for serving and doing the people’s bidding.
