Christmas: A Symbol of Humanity
Humanity is a term that may involve a wide range of meanings and may not just simply be put on the purpose of referring to the human race. It can be that humanity involves different views, values, beliefs, morals, and personalities. Humanity is a strong word that it may also encompass religions, ethnicities, and social structures. However, the term humanity was established to make people realize that despite the differences, the human race is still considered as a single race. Christmas, on the other hand, is the holiday which can show an important symbolism of life. This is a season for joy, love, and hope. But, despite being a word full of positivity, it is also a word where certain points of negative things about the human race would seem to arise. This may point out the wide difference between the rich and the poor. This may also show the apathetic nature of some people. Positively, the meaning of Christmas may also serve as the basis for redemption. A Christmas Carol is a work of art which is subject to several interpretations and analyses. This literature has presented several ideas that point out various representations of humanity highlighting greed, poverty, love, and perhaps redemption. The characters of the story have important symbolisms that are even evident in the real world. Different works have given emphasis on redemption as the theme of this story. Hence, the main objective of this term paper is to illustrate some of the features of humanity being expressed in the work of Charles Dickens. This paper seeks to analyze three important characters of the literature and how they symbolize reality.
The three important characters analyzed in this paper include Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, ad Ebenezer Scrooge. How they are presented in the story are the bases for the symbolisms. The representations of each character will be cross-referenced to the current happenings in the real world.
Cratchit is the father of Tiny Tim and an employee of Scrooge. It was said in the story that Scrooge wanted Cratchit to work on Christmas, despite being that day as a holiday and a moment for families to spend time with one another, enjoying the spirit of the season with smiles and love being shared. He begged on his employer to spare him time to spend with his family on Christmas. Scrooge partially agreed but came up with a decision to ask his employee to work on the first day of the New Year. This may seem absurd for a lot of people in the real world, but with Cratchit, instead of throwing grudges against his boss, he showed gratitude towards him. It may also be inferred that Cratchit did not feel even just a tiny feeling of anger because he perceives his job as his duty and he may have believed that his boss needed him. A lot of laborers would also experience working during the holidays. Taking for instance hospital personnel who have no choice but to spend their holidays within the wards of hospitals, serving not their family members but other people who are considered sick.
