The rapid advancements in technology have impacted human beings in different ways. Health and medicine is one of the sectors that human beings have felt the impact of new technologies in this era. The introduction of genetics and genomics into the treatment of people has improved health statuses of many by helping them to know their genetic sequencing before being treated. In the modern healthcare settings, patients visit their physicians with their genetic sequencing information in hand for easy treatment. The introduction of genomics in genetics has evolved everything in genetics study. According to American Nurses Association (2006), “Genomics is the study of all the genes in the human genome together including their interactions with each other, the environment, and the influence of other psychological and cultural factors,” (as quoted in Lea, 2008). This new technology has created new ways of screening, preventing, diagnosing and treating both rare and common diseases such as diabetes. However, despite the new hopes that this technology has brought for treating and preventing diseases, it has increased the complexity of ethical issues to both patients, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
Regardless of where the nurses practice, they face a number of ethical issues daily and their ethical behaviors is determined by different factors. What is considered right or ethical by one person may be different form a different person who approaches the same situation from a different point of view. The ethical concepts of the nurses include provision of care that is good, correct and rational (ICN). The patients are expected to be provided with opportunities that allow them to express their freedom of choice in choosing services and how they want to be cared.
