Many decisions health care providers make are based on some ethical dimensions. Furthermore, the field encourages anyone with an ethical dilemma to apply these principles. That necessitate study on ethical principles and assessing how they are utilized in resolving ethical dilemmas.
Autonomy
Autonomy is self-governance (Huycke, 2000). It is person's ability to make choices and comprises respect for the choices of others (Heiskell, 2010). People can decide what their unsurpassed interests are. Incorporated in autonomy is prudence. This necessitates patients to be polished about their care. A patient cannot decide about self-care, hence, difficulty health care without having knowledge about choices. Objective and meaningful information is central to autonomy. Prudence encourages the patient to become acquainted for self-care. Patient autonomy is often limited in health care services due to family conflicts, fear, diseases, and economic factors, along with complex medical decisions.
All patients need education, but it varies on what they have to know and to what extent (Butts, 2008). Some individuals can grasp ideas faster than others. Others may require more extensive education grounded on the potential side effects of medication or the severity of a patient's condition. It is the role of the health care workers to ensure that the patients have the knowledge necessary to make appropriate health care decisions (Heiskell, 2010). Self-care is fully dependent on proper education and how the patient and family are prepared to accept it.
