National identity, immigration, and war are highly influential concepts for moviemakers and game developers. Various movies and games seem to explore the themes on different levels (Bogost, 2008). The Act of Valor in the report by The Pentagon's Grip on Hollywood, and the games 'This War of Mine', 'Paper Please' and 'Syrian Journey' represent the horrors of war, terrorism, border-crossing and national documentation in their respective readings 'SWT', 'The Girl with the Controller', and 'BBC & Mission' (BBC, 2015). This paper will analyze the themes and backgrounds of the movie and the course readings.
The Act of Valor is an American movie revolving around the men defending the borders. The Pentagon's Grip on Hollywood describes it as a movie of loyalty, bravery, and honor. It gives immediate insight into the themes, technological aspects during moviemaking, the characters, and the storyline. The report also gives us various glimpses from important movie scenes. Thereby, the audience comprehends the racist propaganda in 'The Act of Valor'. At first, its opening scene blackens the name of Filipinos, whom the movie depicts as the villain. Also, the Filipino bombers planning to kill the Americans, and the military preparations to prevent their attack pose a spoiled image of other nations living in America (English, 2012). Hence, the movie deliberately presents the themes of national and racial bias, along with the results of Great Migration and cultural diversity in the country.
This War of Mine is a war game manipulating the viewer's emotions by unfolding the horrors of War. It is a game by Polish developers who are still victimized by the post-war nightmare of the Nazi regime. SWT – This War of Mine gives an understanding of the game by psychologically disturbing the viewer by realizing the terrors of war and terrorism. They repeatedly show the pictures of those who died and of those who need help. These pictures present a multicultural phenomenon resulting from border crossing after the Civil War.
