Agonistic Displays in Males Betta Fish Behavior of Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta Splendens)
Introduction
Aggressive behavior is believed to play an essential role in the survival of various species because it contributes to their fitness. Siamese fish have been found to display agnostic behaviors, which have certain consequences on their life. Prior residence of a male betta Fish was believed to produce a sense of pride, an agnostic advantage. Notably, the level of dominancy and agnostic was related to the length of duration (Bronstein, 1983). This is also supported by the fact that male Betta Splendens were more aggressive and agnostic as they become familiar with their environment. When the Betta Males dominate a certain territory, they can build nests and have bigger living spaces, create nests, and approached the female fish compared to the inferior fish. In the lab, we will investigate whether Betta Splendens showcase such agnostic behaviors.
Materials and Methods
In order to investigate whether males can exhibit agnostic behaviors, we will transfer male Betta Splendens into an isolated habitat/water tank for a period of one week. This will give the fish sufficient time to familiarize with the environment an interact with the females within the habitat. Agnostic behaviors will be observed after small males are placed into the same tank and assess how the behavior of the Betta Splendens before and after placing the other males. The aim is to observe whether the male Betta Splendens placed in the tank before will fight in order to claim the territory, which will affirm whether they exhibit agnostic behaviors or not. This will be done through the observation of the body movements and whether they compete during the mating process with ...
