What Popol Vuh Says about the Mayan Culture
The Popol Vuh is the creation story of the Maya tribe of the region which is now known as Guatemala. Unlike the case of many creation myths, on Popol Vuh, everything in the Mayan culture was not created by one all-powerful god. According to González (2014), the story explains that the last attempt that led to the creation of ‘true people’ was accomplished through making people using maize. The explanation tells a lot about the Mayan culture. For instance, people get to learn that it was maize cultivation that enabled the early Maya culture to change from being hunters and gatherers to their rather advanced civilization.
Originally, the story was written in hieroglyphics and then translated into the alphabet back in the 16th century. This ancient text describes the creation of landscapes and life on earth in terms of agriculture. Two gods, Plumed Serpent and Hurricane, came together to create the world. They theorized on who will be earth’s provider and how it will be sewn. This reflects how important agriculture is to the Mayan culture (Olivier & Martínez, 2015).
