ITM527 MOD4: Leveraging Information Systems for Management

Case Study Instructions:

Module 4 - Case
Disaster Recovery and Cloud Computing
Assignment Overview
It is important to assure the continuous and proper operation of information systems in business continuity planning and information recovery in disaster recovery, as we have discussed in the previous module. The relationship between information systems and disaster recovery has another perspective—how information system is leveraged to manage disasters.
Information systems and telecommunication infrastructures have long been critical in emergency management. We sometimes heard about from the news how a three-year-old kid even knows to call 911 to seek help in emergency. Nowadays, 70% of 911 calls are from mobile phone. FCC requires 911 calls to be transmitted even if a mobile phone doesn't subscribe to any plan (FCC). Various apps for smartphones exist for emergency management. This is just a beginning.

The Internet, of course, is also a means of help. Please check out the two websites below and see how the websites may help in the time of disaster or emergency.

Geographic Information System (GIS) is another example of information systems that is widely applied in disaster management. The following three presentations show comprehensively how GIS and other information systems have been applied in disaster management and emergency response:

A less considered or known is probably how digitization itself has helped preservation of assets that might be totally lost in a disaster. Please briefly review the following. The key is to be exposed to this perspective. You don't need to know of the details.

Introduction
Disaster occurs both from natural and human sources. They are unpredictable and could include, hurricane, floods, hackers and virus, terrorism, fire, hardware failure and power outage. In the wake of such threats, proper disaster recovery, and business continuity plan can never be over emphasized.
This paper seeks to examine the use of information system in leveraging for disaster management. The paper will look at information technology and business continuity plan, technology, and disaster management, regarding benefits, new advances, and future trends, an example of technology used in disaster management as well as challenges in applying appropriate technology in management.
Technology and business continuity
In the ever risky business environment and dynamically changing the meaning of disaster, that includes terrorist attacks, virus attacks on computers, increasing the severity of natural disasters and increase threats against infrastructure month others. There is growing to monitor continuously and identifying risk, planning continuity strategy and disaster recovery. (Kovács, & Spens, 2011)
Information technology plays a significant role in achieving the above mentioned. Through information technology Gap analysis, a business can monitor the organization's current system recovery abilities and procedures to the system requirement of the enterprise. It determines whether IT current system recovery capabilities meet the business need.
The Gap analysis resulted in a list of critical systems, the current regime recovery time and desired system recovery time. This helps monitor an organization's readiness and also help in identification and management of risks that may emanate from the system. The analysis estimates the recovery time for systems and applications that support the critical business process under the current IT recovery plans.
Information technology helps in formulating an effective disaster recovery plan. Disaster recovery plan entails regular backup of all critical systems and data, offsite storage of backup and restoration instructions, give alternative data center location and clear, complete instructions on how to restore systems. These helps reduce hardware failures, loss of server or power for an extended period.
Benefits of new advancement and future trend in disaster management
Development of technology and switching patterns have opened up a large number of primary and innovative assets and aptitudes that have helped a great deal in disaster management. Use of innovations like geographic information system (GIS) remote sensing and the Internet provides an efficient instrument for viable and productive stockpiling and control of remotely detected information either spatial or non-spatial. (Cova, 1999)
GIS, remote sensing, and the internet are used in some of the disaster management...
