Introduction
Abortion is the ejection of an embryo or fetus from the womb, before its maturity or completion of its gestation period. It is an issue that has continued fueling much debate among critics and supporters alike. Its most controversial dimension is its ties to life itself, raising even further debate among different quarters when it comes to the point that life starts. The proponents and opponents of abortion have opinions that are more or less similar to what the public perceives of the same.
Pros of Abortion
Abortion is usually very helpful when it comes to a situation that places the woman or the mother at risk. This is usually the case when the birth of the child, for example, would result in the death of the mother. Additionally, cases where a victim of rape gets impregnated, usually calls for abortion, especially in a situation where the victim is a minor and hence psychologically unprepared for parenting (Ladock, n.d.).
Cons of Abortion
Abortion, in its most basic interpretation, is the killing of an unborn child. It is the ending of life (Lowen, 2016).This is unethical, crime, and sin, under all circumstances. Doing an abortion usually carries with it the risk of making the woman permanently infertile. This would be very unfair to anyone. Abortion also leaves psychological scars to a woman, ones that might never be completely erased.
Public opinion on Abortion
The public’s perception concerning abortion has been rather balanced, in countries such as the United States, where opinion is roughly split into half. A greater percentage, however, weighs for the legalization of abortion. According to Pew Research Centre, this figure stands at 56%, while 41% are against it (Pew Research Centre, 2016).The remaining percentage is not decided. This portion represents an absolutist perception of the public (Leonhardt, 2013).
Conclusion
Abortion has continued being a very divisive issue in most societies today. It carries a lot of weight and controversy since it directly hits on the sanctity of life. The proponents of abortion opine that it should be legalized due to its life-saving aspect when it comes to a risky pregnancy and in the case of impregnation of a minor. The opponents, on the other hand, assert that it is a crime to kill, and it can also result in permanent damage to the woman, be it psychologically, or productively.
