Response to Renea Springston’s Post
Renea is correct by accepting that lack of multicultural awareness can become cause an ethical issue when the counsellor fails to acknowledge and respect cultural diversity. This means that a counsellor who lacks multicultural competence is less likely to know the cultural differences among people from diverse cultural backgrounds. According to Ahmed, Wilson, Henriksen and Jones (2011), the increasing number of families and individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds poses challenges to the ability of the counselor to meet the needs of a diverse and growing society.
Response to Mirian Hobbs’ Post
Hobbs has presented an appropriate answer by arguing that lack of multicultural competence amounts to an ethical issue when the counsellor lacks the requisite education and knowledge to counsel individuals from diverse backgrounds. Sue, Zane, Hall and Berger (2009) point out that multiculturalism education is important for counselors to understand the needs of ethnic minority groups. Hobbs further provides an appropriate argument that adhering to the ACA code of ethics is among the ways of enhancing cultural competency (Pettifor, 2001).
