As people openly discuss their thoughts, experiences and talk about their emotions they self-evaluate, and develop better coping strategies. Cognitive behavioral therapy then allows the clients to understand how their thoughts affect their behavior. Hence, an individual can manage their unhelpful thoughts that influence their behavior and change. This is consistent with the observation that thoughts and actions affect the way an individual behaves and should both be considered in therapy sessions.
5-1 Steve
The cognitive behavior therapy allows clients to collaborate with clients as they engage to meet the client’s needs, and the therapy sessions may be conducted for each person individually or in groups. Through discussions, the clients develop ways to challenge the problem behavior when therapists rely on the CBT. The behavioral approaches focus more on unlearning maladaptive behaviors. The CBT approach encourages the clients to play a more active role unlike other behavioral approaches that only focus on observable behavior.

Cognitive behavior therapy works best when there is collaboration between the client and the counselor and it is considered a ‘talking therapy’. This approach helps individuals to deal with unhelpful thoughts, ideas, attitudes and maladaptive behavior. The client is then able to identify their thought patterns and how they influence behavior. This contrasts with other behavioral approaches that merely highlight on caching harmful behavior.

Behavioral theories highlight that stimulus control can be effective in modifying maladaptive behavior, by focusing on conditioning linked to negative associations. Since emotional states can be conditioned it follows that it is also possible to condition responses. The behavioral approaches hold that people exhibit certain behaviors when there are certain cues. The cognitive behavioral theory is superior as it emphasizes the link between behavior and thoughts. An individual’s thought patterns and experience influence how they behave, rather than simply cues. CBT is a goal-oriented approach that can be applied in diverse settings using individualized plans.
