I agree with you that what can be considered as “too much work” for a counselor is primarily undertaking too much task that takes way too long to conclude. For instance, having too much work that necessitates one to work past office hours, or taking work home shows that one is working too much. It is understandable that a counselor would want their clients to succeed, but pegging a client’s success to your own further is too much. To avoid this, counselors should enroll in therapy, to relieve their stress and share with other counselors about their experiences (Smith, 2017, Apr 13).

Trying to help a client who is not ready to be supported or change is indeed working too hard. Counselors particularly those dealing with substance abuse cases, often find themselves doing too much work due to; failure of clients to accept that they have a problem, failure to put effort in their recovery and relapsing (Oser, Biebel, Pullen & Harp, 2013, pp.17-19). Consequently, a counselor has to work harder to meet their evolving needs. It would be wise for counselors to develop frames by which to work by outlining the extents to go to help a client and determine at what point it is too much (Trotter-Mathison & Skovholt, 2014, pp.5-8).
