The year 1984 was one of the most controversial years in the history of LGBT in the West. Mainly, this is because this year was when Chris Smith, was elected as a politician and openly declared that he is gay. Nonetheless, this year could also be said as crucial for the empowerment of Labor and Trade Unions, which seeks to address societal problems that their members experience. In line with this, the 2014 movie Pride seeks to address both issues of feminism and labor inequality. In the film, it was shown how the two groups – LGBT and Labor Union – have had a rough relationship by the start of the movie. Mainly, this was because of the existing “homophobic mindset” during those times, as the issue of gender inequality has not been addressed by the nation yet. However, as the movie progresses, the viewers would learn that these two groups would then accept each other and learn that they are both fighting “on the same side”. After watching the movie, I believe that its main aim is to show that societal problems are not isolated on their own. Rather, these issues that we face in our day-to-day lives are connected with each other, and thus must be addressed together.
Throughout the film, the life of the Lesbian and Gay Support the Miners (LGSM) Group and their efforts to help other groups were put into focus. It shows how the protagonists (member of the LGSM) initially failed at trying to extend their support towards the mineworkers, as the National Union of Mineworkers, declined their support. As stated earlier, this was because of the fact that the issue of sexuality has not yet been completely removed during those times despite the efforts by the government and other institutions to fight the negative notions and prejudice towards the LBGT community. It also shows that instead of being grateful towards the help that they are trying to extend, they were shunned by the very people that they are trying to help themselves. However, this gap was then addressed as they were able to help the people who are in need (the Welsh mining town) despite their small numbers, while in return, these people learned to accept them as well. In the words of Margaret Mead, an American Anthropologist, this commitment of the small group of LGBT towards change reflects her belief saying that “… never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world.
