Human beings display different types of emotions, positive or negative, depending on the situation or circumstances they face in life across the equally diverse social dimensions. The ability to understand or relate to the emotional state of another individual as well as express and even control one’s emotions thrives on their emotional intelligence or emotionality. The display of emotions exhibits some differences between t6he male and female genders across the social divide. It is a common perception, for instance, that women are more emotional or rather have the ability to express their emotions better than their male counterparts. The perceived difference in emotionality between male and female genders makes for one of the behavioral or psychological sex differences in studying the psychology of sex and gender. It is through the evaluation of the underlying principles in the psychology of gender and sex concerning the emotionality of human beings that one gets an informed understanding of the existing difference in the same between the male and female genders. Provided herein is a comprehensive review of some of the literature on the difference in emotionality between the male and female genders to establish why the female gender is considered to have higher emotionality.
Literature Review
The evaluation or study of the emotional difference between the male and female gender takes into account a wide range of elements characterizing the emotional construct of an individual, group, or a particular gender. Among these elements include the type of emotion, positive or negative, whose display showcases or display gender differences as well as how these emotions are expressed.
A research study by Fischer, Kret, and Broekens (2018), for instance, seeks to validate the common perception that women are more susceptible to the subtle emotions compared to their male counterparts CITATION Fis18 \l 1033 (Fischer, 2018). The research study, Gender Differences in emotion perception and self-reported emotional intelligence: A test of the emotion sensitivity hypothesis, builds on or rather seeks to test the hypothesis that women exhibit higher emotionality in perceiving subtle emotional signals. In essence, the researchers sought to establish whether or not the female gender exhibited higher emotionality as perpetuated by the notion that they have a higher sensitivity to low emotional signals. The research study tested the hypothesis on 5000 participants who also carried out emotional intelligence tests and submitted self-reports on the same CITATION Fis18 \l 1033 (Fischer, 2018). Participants were tested on their ability to detect six different emotions displayed by different human and non-human faces. The study findings showcased a similarity in the perception of the six different emotional signals displayed at different intensities.
