Introduction
A single parent is either a female or a male parent who takes the responsibility of bringing up the children without the assistance of the other parent (Ganem & Agnew 2007). The single parents have the responsibility of ensuring that the needs of the children are catered for whether they are financial, material or even the emotional needs. Single parenthood is caused by some reasons including a divorce, the death of one of the parents, separation and many others. Reliable information shows that the number of single parents had reduced in the 1960’s with a significant margin.
However, things are slowly going back to the way they were in 1930 as the number of single parents is increasing each day (Misra et al., 2007). For long the society has believed that families which comprise of lone parents always fail, they, however, forget the fact that single parents have excellent communication skills, love and the willingness to work together which are the most important values in any happy family.
Single Parent Families
Parenting is one of the most important jobs in the world, and no one understands this fact better than single parents (Park 2007). They spend almost all of their time with their families which they always prioritize as their first job before anything else. For most single parents their families are their best friends, and they, therefore, have an easy time coping with each family member because they have understood their strengths and weaknesses (Gardner et al., 2010). Single parents have the opportunity to make some of the most important decisions for their children and are therefore likely to choose that which is most beneficial for them.
Children who are brought up in a single parent family have the same values as those brought up in a family where both parents are available. The children from the single parent are super responsible (Rimehaug & Wallander 2009). They watch their parents every step of the way as they manage to work and be there for them at the same time. For that reason, a sense of responsibility is instilled in the children from an early age until they are fully grown.
Additionally, the children and parents in single families can work together as a team which is of benefit to them because working as a team enables them to discover much about themselves as well as other family members (Williams et al.,2008).
