Depression
Depression is one of the common mood disorders that can influence how people think, feel, and get involved in various activities such as eating, working and sleeping (Sigurdson & McMullen, 2013). For a person to be diagnosed with depression, he/she must have the presenting symptoms for at least two weeks. This essay provides a summary of the brochure what you should know about adult depression, and an evaluation of the information presented therein.
Summary
The warning signs of depressions include the feelings of sadness, worthless, guilty, hopelessness, irritability, nervous, loss of appetite, loss of interest in all activities, and change in weight (Speak Up, n.d). Every person is at risk of depression; however, people whose lives are subject to stress, those with a family history of depression, having mental disorders, and other health issues subject them to risks of depression (Speak Up, n.d). People with depression can get help from friends, family members, and the doctor when they can talk.
Various treatment options for depression are available; for instance, counseling, medication, and the support groups (Speak Up, n.d). Better results are obtained when the treatment options are combined; however, counseling is believed to be most effective way of treatment. The client should talk to the doctor to determine the effectiveness of the therapy. Medicines can also be prescribed, the patient has to discuss with the physician and provides the current drugs and supplements he/she is taking to determine if the option can improve his/her situation faster. It is detrimental to assume that one's health can improve without treatment.
People suffering from depression require support from family members and friends in making and getting appointments, motivating the patients, detecting changes in the patients' conditions, and getting anything they need (Speak Up, n.d). The patient can also recover faster when he/she follows the doctor's treatment plan, sticking to his/her daily routine, activities, and getting enough sleep.
Evaluation
The topic of depression is of interest to me because it is a mental situation that affects people across all the populations and can be dangerous if it is not well contained. One of the aspects the article has acknowledged is for the depressed person to avoid being isolated from the family and friends; this is good for the patient because some of the symptoms of depression can only b...
