One of the inappropriate uses of statistics is representing a measurement as the fastest growing without considering the context. Even as the measure focuses on increased change, this is potentially misleading since comparing one phenomenon or a variable with another would give a clearer picture. For instance, if one states that a stock price is growing fast while it has been volatile in the past and even lower than before. Comparing with a stock that has grown gradually, but has barely lost value, one would think that the fast growing stock has been doing well over time. As such, there is a need to place context when using statistics to avoid misunderstandings.
Another example where statics are misrepresented is where the findings are generalized based on biased sampling. For instance, when seeking political views where the respondents identified are overwhelmingly liberal or conservative, there is likely to be biased. In such a case, they are most likely to give similar opinions, while the general public would likely have more divergent views. Sampling should be random, and where possible large samples are preferred to limit the margin of error. Efforts should be made to avoid bad data collection to rely on statistics.
