Communicating effectively is crucial for human social, economic, and political life. Communication refers to sharing information and meaning between two or more people (Tucker et al., 2019, p. 11). It enables people to pass information to other people in the right content and context, ensuring understanding between the communicating parties. This means that communication ensures that people encode and decode information. Communication can be verbal, written, or by use of sign language (Van Ruler, 2018). This shows that communication is crucial in human survival. It ensures that information is conveyed from the sender to the receiver and feedback given in the simplest, easily understandable form.
We need to study communication to ensure that we can communicate effectively and efficiently. Communication is a tool that helps us to develop and manage relationships with other people and ensure that we work harmoniously together. It helps ensure that we are conversant with the fundamental communication methods, including written, verbal, and sign languages. Studying communication also helps us acknowledge how various people prefer to communicate, thus helping us appreciate them. Therefore, this shows the importance of studying communication.
Communication is a process because it is continuous. It begins from the initiator, goes through a channel to the intended audience, and back to the initiator as feedback (Tucker et al., 2019, p. 10). The initiator of a communication process is often called the sender. They encode a message, choosing the right channel to reach the receiver of the message. The receiver decodes the message on the other end depending on the amount of noise in the communication channel, which sometimes distorts the message (Van Ruler, 2018). The receiver then sends feedback to the sender, who evaluates it to ascertain whether it received the intended message. This shows that communication is a process.
