The Five Bagatelles, Op. 23 by Gerald Finzi
There are five sections or movements in “The Five Bagatelles, Op. 23” by Gerald Finzi, namely: prelude, romance, carol, forlana, and fughetta. The piece begins with a prelude, which introduces the other parts of the music, and since the music was written at different points in time, Finzi was inspired by different composers. The music has tuneful melodies, and it was written and composed for clarinet and piano (Rayborn, 2016). In the short instrumental music, the prelude movement begins with a simple melody and played with emphasis using the clarinet. There is an interplay of the piano and clarinet, but the piano also supports and complements the clarinet. When there is a change in the key and meter the music slows down.
The romance movement is slower than the preclude and is the most lyrical of the five movements. The third bagatelle, “Carol”, is marked by Andantino Semplice tempo (slowly and simply) while the fourth bagatelle, Forlana — Allegretto Grazioso. The fifth bagatelle, Fughetta in the Allegro Vivacemode ends the short pieces, and Fughetta is characterized by extreme ranges and the dynamic range of the clarinet makes one of the challenging movements in the piece. I liked the way there movements were linked to each other and differentiated by the melody and tempo where the clarinet was used alone and combined with the piano.
