Questions for your Reading Journal on Chapter 1 through Chapter 4.
Question #1) After reading Chapter 1 through Chapter 4, describe the relationship between Astrid and Ingrid early in the book.
Question #2). Why was Astrid fearful that her mother would "fly away" if she mentioned her desires such as having a father, or going to summer camp or a YWCA program?
Question #3). How do you feel about Ingrid and Astrid as characters? Do you feel sympathy? Explain.

1 The relationship between Astrid and Ingrid can be described as one that is unfriendly. Ingrid is so cold towards Astrid and there is no motherly love. This goes as far as Astrid starts to fear about being abandoned by her mother. Astrid is not given room to express herself as her mother is cold-hearted and eccentric and lives by her own set of rules. This makes Astrid to feel lonely and even has problems at school.
2 Astrid feared that if she ever mentioned this to her mother, Ingrid would be upset leaving her alone. She knew her mother did not want to be asked that question, as her earlier attempts were fruitless. If she had asked her mother to go to YWCA her mother would never come back hence she feared to ask any of the questions (Fitch 13).
3 My feelings towards Astrid and Ingrid are full of sympathy. Astride is a young girl who needs direction and above all love from her mother. Instead of being loved and being given directions, her mother does not care about her, and she is coldhearted toward her and her rules were also strict and could not be broken. As a growing young, Astrid all she needed was love, care and a mother who was to be always there for her. However, Astrid looks so demoralized to an extent that her experience at home is affecting her lifestyle at school.
