Vikas Swarup wrote the novel Slum dog Millionaire. The author uses Ram Mohammad, a boy from rural India, as the main character in the book. The story starts when Ram Mohammad finds himself locked up on accusation that he cheated in the quiz show titled ‘Who Will Win a Billion`. Ram is from a humble background in India and works as a waiter in a restaurant. Despite of his background however, Ram wins the quiz and nobody is capable of comprehending the situation. The presenters of the show are also surprised by the fact that he could answer all the questions correctly in spite of being a slum boy. In addition, the hosts are even more troubled since, they lack funds to pay him. It does not make sense to them that such a young person from the slums could be able to answer the questions effectively without having had any interaction with urban life. These factors influence the anchors to arrest him and charge him for the offence of cheating. Ram gets Smiata Shah, a lawyer, to represent him in the case brought against him.
In reviewing the responses that Ram provides to the questions asked, it is clear that his life has been short although full of events. The responses indicate the nature of Indian culture and the influences it has had on its people in various geographical locations.
