While the 1929 stock market crash was not the leading cause of the Great Depression, it accelerated the collapse of the global economy. The U.S. stock market of the 1920s had undergone a significant expansion hitting its highest point in August 1929. By this time, there was high unemployment rate and low production, which left stocks in serious excess of their real value. Towards the end of September and the start of October 1929, stock prices began to crunch and the real fall was felt on October 18. During the Black Thursday, October 24, the market witnessed excessive share trading and reached its peak on the infamous Black Tuesday, October 29, making the stock prices to collapse completely (Kelly np).
