The four main reasons that people avoid getting tested or receiving test results are;
1 Fear
2 Ignorance of facts about the disease
3 Invasiveness of the procedure to their privacy
4 The procedures consume time and are costly.
“Fast and hot” decision making are non-contemplative and rushed where one makes decision based on impulse while the “slow and cold” decision making involves critical thinking, analysis of facts, deliberation of cost-benefit value and making an informed decision rationally and with time. The two models can lead to similar results especially when the benefits are outweighed by the costs of the decision. The “fast and hot” decisions are emotional while the other is analytical and none is superior to the other since each can yield better result than the other.
Patients would use the “fast and hot” process when presented by potentially threatening health information because they would rather maintain their equilibrium or feeling of security in not knowing that they are in danger. For fear of the unknown, ...
