The Root Cause of Endocrine Disorders and The Hypothalamic-pituitary System

Coursework Instructions:

1. As with all disorders, it is essential to determine the root cause of endocrine disorders. What are primary, secondary, and tertiary disorders? Compare the differences among primary, secondary, and tertiary forms of hyposecretion and hypersecretion.
2. The hypothalamic-pituitary system is the main controlling factor for normal endocrine function. What are some of the common ways for this finely balanced system to become unstable?

Question One
Primary disorders inhibit the functioning of the downstream glands, leading to endocrine illness. On the other hand, secondary endocrine disorders occur due to pituitary gland dysfunction, while hypothalamic dysfunction and hormone release cause tertiary endocrine illness (Funder, 2017). Primary hyposecretion occurs when the endocrine glands secret relatively low hormone levels due to an abnormality in the gland's functioning. Dietary deficiency of iodine resulting in decreased production of thyroid hormones is an example of primary hyposecretion. Equally, the genetic absence of the enzyme used to form steroids in the adrenal cortex leading to less cortisol secretion is among these examples (Askitis et al., 2018). The other causes include toxic chemicals and diseases which damage the endocrine gland.
The most prevalent cause of primary hyposecretion in the adrenal gland is auto-immune illnesses like Addison's disease. The illnesses result in low thyroid hormone levels and adrenaline. Treatments like prednisone or adrenocorticotrophin-hormone (ACTH) secretory granules tumors can cause spontaneous hyposecretion, resulting in Cushing's syndrome (Funder, 2017). Secondary hyposecretion is different from primary hypo-secretio...
