Global Health Crisis and Nurse Practitioners' Roles

Coursework Instructions:

Please reply to the below discussion.

Global healthcare and health promotion status should concern both developed and underdeveloped countries. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the transmission rate into the United States demonstrated how quickly disease can spread with increased global interconnectivity and travel. As hospital systems were overwhelmed rapidly, states began to enact temporary full-practice authority (FPA) for nurse practitioners (NPs) to increase healthcare providers nationwide. As a result, NPs' essential role in meeting the demand for healthcare emerged as the pandemic continued to ravage communities and global economies while exposing several weaknesses in global preparedness. Seven million people worldwide lost the battle to COVID-19, with a disproportionate amount in low and middle-income countries (World Bank Group, 2023). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 400 million people worldwide lack access to primary medical care, and 58% of countries have less than 40 nurses per 10,000 people (Rosa et al., 2020). Increased global recognition of NP abilities to provide low-cost, preventative, and comprehensive healthcare has resulted in 70 countries beginning to adopt policies to begin utilizing NPs in practice (Rosa et al., 2020). As a result, NPs must remain involved in advocating for the profession on national and international platforms to push healthcare policies forward that ensure increased access to quality care. Often, healthcare is reactive, but if COVID-19 has taught us anything, the global community must begin planning for the next pandemic or contagion in partnership with NPs to meet any future biological threats.
In this course, I learned many skills related to policy analysis, health advocacy, and increasing my awareness of current laws and regulations within my local and state communities. Before this course, as an individual without political lobbying experience, I needed to learn how to engage nursing organizations to advocate for healthcare policies to increase access to affordable, comprehensive primary care. I am satisfied with my new abilities to engage with local and state organizations to address pressing healthcare issues, including access to care, FPA for NPs nationwide, and harnessing political processes to advocate for health equity and justice in underserved communities. These skills will serve a purpose during my clinical experience. It will allow me to research the local community, available resources, current health policies, and initiatives for health promotion before arriving at the clinical location. Awareness of those public resources and an enhanced ability to assess social determinants of health (SDoH) will allow for a more comprehensive and compassionate approach to my health assessments and corresponding recommendations. In addition, these skills will continue to develop as I progress through subsequent courses. Every class offers valuable skills to apply within today's challenging healthcare landscape and sets us up for success as we transition into our new roles as healthcare providers.

Hi! I agree that the global public health pandemic regarding Covid-19 challenged nurses’ roles in health promotion and preparedness in national and international contexts. More specifically, the pandemic raised questions about whether nurses can practice at the full degree of their professional qualifications and capabilities to augment health outcomes and prevent loss of lives during healthcare crises. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are advanced practice nurses with the skills and competencies to lead healthcare organizations and care delivery processes and thus can be leveraged to reduce structural healthcare discrepancies and augment the ability of people to access healthcare irrespective of their diversity. Some viable recommendations for addressing this problem emerge from your discourse. The global community, including NPs, must plan on how to effectively handle the next pandemic by laying the frameworks that promote primary medical care access and deliver high-quality and effective patient-centered care (Rosa et al., 2020). In this context, governments should invest in training more NPs and implementing policies that foster N...
