Coccidioidesimmitisisthe fungus that is responsible the disease called coccidiodomycosis, which is common in the arid areas of California. Eight of the state prisons found in California are found in the San Joaquin Valley, an area that is arid and prone to the fungus(Wheeler, D. Lucas & C. Mohle-Boetani, 2015). In the research carried out in some of the two correction facilities by Wheeler, Lucas, and Mohle-Boetani, African American inmates that are above the age of 40 years are at higher risk of contracting the diseases after inhaling the spores from the fungus, than their white colleagues(St. John, 2013).Following the findings of the risk element, a court ruling instructed that African Americans over the age of 40 years should never be sent to serve their time in any of these two correction facilities.
For the African Americans, this is an aspect that instills fear as they have a higher risk of contracting the disease which can be fatal. This means that the main audience for the research findings is targeted at inmates and more so the African Americans(Warmerdam, 2015).
