Overview
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected almost all sectors of the economy, the banking industry being one of them. Through the government’s directives to self-quarantine, social distance, and stay-at-home measures to curb the spread of coronavirus, people are discouraged from visiting places of social gatherings, such as banking halls. In that light, banks have to change the way they serve their customers. The key business functions affected are online or mobile banking, teller services, the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), and credit and debit card services. The key personnel include customers, tellers, customer support, and network administrators, while the primary third-parties are software providers, Internet Service Providers (ISP), credit card companies, and monitoring or information security personnel.
Decision Structure
The key decision-makers in the banking scenario are facility management, department managers, and human resource managers. Moreover, network administrators and information security experts are allowed to participate in decision-making since they are the ones playing significant roles during the pandemic. Besides, banks are encouraging their customers to use online or mobile banking and avoid visiting their halls for ordinary services (Patel, 2020). For minor issues, clients are advised to call customer care and seek guidance. Network administrators and security experts ensure that customers can get services over the Internet, and they monitor the banking system to make sure that unauthorized personnel are kept away.
Preparation
The bank needs to prepare by buying and storing the following materials:
Routers.
Switches.
ATMs.
Laptops.
Face masks.
Hand sanitizers.
The above equipment facilitates remote working and ensures that customers can access bank services over the Internet. For example, to decongest banks, some employees should be given laptops that are configured to the banking system so that they can work from home. Routers and switches increase Internet connectivity and coverage. ATMs should be installed in different strategic positions for customers who do not know how to use online or mobile banking services.
